Obligation: Attend the Novus Ordo Mass OR avoid Sacrilege.
knowing what happens now in Novus Ordo Masses, should Catholics continue to attend these Masses or avoid them completely?
What about the Sunday Obligation?
What if the distance to the Traditional Latin Mass is too far, must I go there every Sunday?
Why not just go to the local Novus Ordo Mass?
No faithful Catholic should have to go to worship God and trample on Him.
The truth is you don't have to go to Mass if the reason is legitimate. Is sacrilege not legitimate reason not to go to these Masses?
But what about the obligation?
What is the Sunday Obligation exactly?
The Sunday Obligation is to keep Holy the Lord's day.
Sunday Mass is one of two precepts to the Obligation.
The two precepts are:
- Sunday Mass (Can be exempted due to a serious reason.)
- Resting, not doing any unnecessary work. (Even working due to a serious reason can be exempted).
To the Catholic faithful, going to Mass on Sundays is necessary, the faithful would never miss the Sunday Mass precept.
However the Church does allow exemptions for illness, caring for young, sick, work, distance and other legitimate excuses permitted by your priest.
Here are the following scenarios legitimate and illegitimate excuses for missing Mass:
With any one of these legitimate (serious reasons) Catholics can be exempted from meeting their Sunday precept. Meaning they can still meet their Sunday Obligation of keeping holy the Lord's day by staying home and keeping their Sunday holy, through prayers, the rosary, reading sacred scriptures, penance etc.; it's the same with any other legitimate exemptions.
Here is how to avoid sacrilege:
This is not to say, don't go Mass. Go to Mass, but go exclusively to a TLM church. Avoid the sacrilege.
Some traditional families are willing to travel hours to get to a TLM church every Sunday. It may seem a lot of effort, but it's really a blessing. Remember: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind.
